Special situations require special solutions—and the same applies to horseshoeing.
Under normal circumstances, the hoof sole remains exposed when fitting a horseshoe. In certain cases, however, it is necessary to enclose and protect the sole area by using a horseshoe with a closed sole area and/or additional padding material.
In these situations, hoof pads made of leather, plastic, rubber, or felt are commonly placed between the hoof and the horseshoe.
